Role overview The Compliance Engineering Manager leads backend engineering teams responsible for the regulated systems that gate customer access on an online wagering platform. The role centers on responsible gaming enforcement, geolocation, state and self-exclusion, regulatory data residency, and prohibited persons workflows, partnering closely with Risk, Legal, and Compliance stakeholders to translate regulatory obligations into engineering plans. It is a hands-on leadership position for someone who can balance strategic direction with deep technical execution across a Java and AWS ecosystem.
Responsibilities - Manage backend engineering teams (Java, AWS) that own compliance-critical systems covering geolocation, state and self-exclusion, responsible gaming limits, and prohibited persons enforcement - Set and enforce high standards for security, reliability, and regulatory compliance across every live regulated market - Establish monitoring, alerting, and intervention workflows to detect and prevent fraudulent activity and compliance violations in real time - Partner with Risk, Legal, Product, and Data teams to align on regulatory strategy and translate requirements into engineering roadmaps - Lead the engineering strategy for user sync and data consistency pipelines that keep customer account data and eligibility status accurate across jurisdictions - Mentor engineers and engineering leaders, fostering a culture of operational excellence, empathy, and innovation while navigating ambiguity
Requirements - 2–4+ years managing software engineering teams that delivered secure, scalable systems in regulated or high-risk environments - Background leading or contributing within a Java and AWS ecosystem - Demonstrated experience building systems for fraud detection, payments, compliance, or responsible gaming - Ability to balance strategic direction with deep technical execution and architectural decision-making - Strong communication and storytelling skills to influence across Engineering, Product, Risk, Legal, and Compliance - Proven success navigating complex, cross-functional, and regulatory challenges with a commitment to operational excellence
Nice to have - Hands-on experience with geolocation and location services infrastructure, including low-latency geofencing - Familiarity with compliance gaming controls such as wager limits, session controls, cooling-off periods, and self-exclusion workflows - Background with prohibited persons enforcement frameworks and exclusion registry ingestion - Experience with user sync pipelines and cross-jurisdiction data consistency
Benefits and work setup - Remote-first USA role with a home office setup stipend available for remote employees - Base salary range of $172,000–$215,000 USD, excluding short- and long-term incentive compensation - Interview and onboarding may include limited in-person components depending on role and location, with details confirmed during the process
