Remote job
Lead Engineer Data
Job details
About this role
Role overview Provide hands-on technical leadership for enterprise data engineering, building and improving pipelines, ingestion frameworks, and shared data platforms. The role combines production ownership and direct coding with guidance for complex initiatives and a gradual move from established SAS Viya and Amazon Redshift workflows toward Snowflake. It also helps ensure data solutions remain reliable, secure, governed, and aligned with enterprise architecture.
Responsibilities - Design, develop, test, and maintain data pipelines and ingestion frameworks using SQL, Python, and ETL processes. - Lead technical delivery across teams, balancing production support with modernization and deciding which workflows to retain, migrate, redesign, or retire. - Diagnose failures and data discrepancies in SAS Viya and SQL workflows, apply safe fixes, validate outputs, and improve monitoring and recovery. - Turn complex business needs into scalable, reusable datasets by clarifying definitions with subject matter experts and reconciling outputs. - Improve platform performance, scalability, reliability, and cost efficiency, including Snowflake query and compute practices. - Uphold data quality, security, and governance; lead code reviews and use version control, automated testing, and CI/CD for safer releases. - Mentor engineers, document processes, build shared ownership, and collaborate with architects and stakeholders on Snowflake transformations, dimensional models, and migration validation.
Requirements - Bachelor’s degree in computer science or a related field, or equivalent training and experience. - At least six years of data engineering experience on enterprise-scale platforms. - Advanced SQL skills, including complex transformations and query tuning, plus strong practical Python experience. - Strong AWS and modern data platform experience, including hands-on Snowflake engineering. - Deep knowledge of data modeling, ETL/ELT, and warehousing, including dimensional models and reusable analytics datasets. - Ability to lead technical decisions, resolve complex production issues, and communicate clearly with technical and business partners.
Nice to have
SAS or SAS Viya experience is strongly preferred. Familiarity with migration reconciliation, parallel runs, and rollback planning is useful for transitioning established production workflows.
