Staff Product Engineer (Full-Stack, TypeScript)

Role overview

A fully remote U.S.-based employer is hiring a Staff Product Engineer to lead architecture and engineering standards for a fast-growing, distributed product team. This is a senior, hands-on leadership role partnering directly with executive technology leadership to scale a full-stack TypeScript platform, mentor engineers, and shape the long-term technical direction without the structure of traditional Agile or Scrum ceremonies.

Responsibilities

- Own end-to-end architecture and design of complex, mission-critical systems across the stack, balancing scalability, security, and maintainability. - Partner with executive technology leadership to translate business strategy into practical technical roadmaps and to make major architectural trade-off decisions. - Strengthen reliability through monitoring, SLOs, incident response practices, and blameless postmortems with measurable follow-through. - Turn manual work, including deployments, data fixes, reporting, and documentation, into automated, scalable systems. - Lead design and code reviews, set engineering standards, and mentor engineers in technical judgment and ownership. - Drive cross-functional technical initiatives without a clear owner to completion and align U.S. and international engineering teams.

Requirements

- 8+ years of professional software engineering experience, including time as a Staff, Principal, or equivalent technical leader. - Background in startup or growth-stage environments where ownership of outcomes, not just assigned tasks, was expected. - Deep, hands-on expertise in TypeScript, React, Next.js, Node.js, and PostgreSQL, including schema design, transactions, locking, and query performance. - Demonstrated experience designing and operating business-critical systems such as workflows, integrations, financial transactions, or sensitive-data platforms. - Solid grounding in reliability engineering, monitoring, and incident response. - Comfort operating with high autonomy and ownership outside a traditional Agile or Scrum framework, using shaped problems rather than sprint ceremonies.

Nice to have

- Event-driven, asynchronous, or workflow-heavy systems using tools such as Kafka, Temporal, or Inngest. - Scaling software across multiple markets or jurisdictions, or work in regulated or compliance-focused environments. - Prior experience with Shape Up methodology. - Helping an organization transition from outsourced engineering to a strong in-house team, or building internal developer productivity platforms.
