Founding Platform Engineer -- Ruby on Rails

Role overview

This Founding Platform Engineer role establishes the technical foundation for a compliance and human risk management platform. As the first dedicated platform engineer, you will partner closely with engineering leadership to define the architecture and roadmap, then build and shape a platform engineering squad. The position remains deeply hands-on while owning the core systems every engineer depends on, including billing, integrations, Kubernetes infrastructure, CI/CD, AI infrastructure, and observability.

Responsibilities

- Own the technical roadmap for platform engineering and lead architectural decisions that span multiple engineering teams - Architect, build, and operate highly scalable backend services using Ruby on Rails - Design and operate Kubernetes infrastructure, cloud architecture, and deployment pipelines - Improve developer productivity through CI/CD, automation, internal tooling, and engineering best practices - Build and evolve the AI platform, including LLM orchestration, agent infrastructure, prompt management, evaluation pipelines, model routing, and AI observability - Own the billing platform, including subscriptions, licensing, payments, usage metering, invoicing, and Stripe integrations - Design and maintain secure, scalable integrations with HRIS platforms, identity providers, and enterprise customers using REST APIs, OAuth, SAML, SCIM, and webhooks - Build observability through logging, metrics, tracing, alerting, and performance monitoring - Diagnose and resolve complex production issues across infrastructure, applications, and distributed systems - Mentor engineers through technical leadership, design reviews, and engineering best practices

Requirements

- Proven experience architecting and operating scalable backend services with Ruby on Rails - Hands-on experience with Kubernetes infrastructure, cloud architecture, and deployment pipelines - Strong background in CI/CD, automation, internal tooling, and developer productivity - Experience owning billing systems such as subscriptions, licensing, payments, usage metering, and invoicing, ideally including Stripe - Track record designing secure, scalable enterprise integrations using REST APIs, OAuth, SAML, SCIM, and webhooks - Demonstrated technical leadership, mentorship capability, and strong ownership mindset

Nice to have

- Experience building AI-native products or internal AI platforms - Familiarity with LLMs, AI agents, prompt engineering, RAG, vector databases, and evaluation frameworks - Infrastructure as Code experience with Terraform and Helm charts - Event-driven architectures and distributed messaging systems such as RabbitMQ, SQS, or NATS - Background in high-growth B2B SaaS environments - Knowledge of SOC 2, cloud security, and compliance best practices - Open-source contributions or a track record of technical thought leadership
