Platform Engineer

Role overview

A Platform Engineer role with a U.S. government contractor, blending DevOps and Site Reliability Engineering work to build and maintain a cloud-based platform that internal application teams rely on. The position focuses on Kubernetes infrastructure, automation, and platform reliability in a remote, asynchronous setting. U.S. citizenship is required due to the nature of the work.

Responsibilities

- Build, maintain, and improve Kubernetes clusters and containerized workloads running across cloud environments - Develop infrastructure as code to provision platform resources in a consistent, repeatable way - Own and evolve CI/CD pipelines, including pipeline configuration, runners, and automated deployment workflows - Support identity and access management tooling, handling role setup, user onboarding, and access troubleshooting - Implement and operate monitoring, alerting, and logging to maintain platform health and aid incident investigation - Manage certificate lifecycle operations, including renewals and related automation - Contribute to platform security through container hardening, hardened image compliance, and support for accreditation processes - Partner with application teams to troubleshoot deployments, broken pipelines, and platform integration issues - Write and maintain technical documentation, runbooks, architecture decision records, and operational standards - Participate in on-call rotations and serve as a tier-2 responder for platform incidents - Mentor junior engineers through pairing, code review, and knowledge sharing

Requirements

- Hands-on experience deploying, managing, and troubleshooting Kubernetes clusters and workloads - Proficiency with infrastructure as code tools such as Terraform or Pulumi - Experience with CI/CD platforms, particularly GitLab CI or comparable systems - Working knowledge of Linux or Unix operating systems and command-line administration - Cloud platform experience, ideally with AWS services including EC2, EKS, IAM, S3, and VPC - Familiarity with containerization concepts, Docker, and image registry management - Ability to read and write YAML fluently for manifests, Helm charts, and pipeline configurations - Strong independent problem-solving skills in a remote, asynchronous environment - U.S. citizenship and eligibility to access Controlled Unclassified Information - Ability to obtain a DoD 8570 IAT II certification such as Security+ CE

Nice to have

- Eligibility for a security clearance - Familiarity with hardened image registries, Continuous Authority to Operate processes, or related federal compliance workflows - Experience with identity platforms such as Keycloak - Observability tooling experience with Prometheus, Grafana, or the ELK stack - Programming or scripting ability in Go, Python, or Bash - DevSecOps background with secure coding and vulnerability remediation - GitOps workflow experience using tools like Flux or ArgoCD - Prior work on production DoD systems that have achieved Authority to Operate - AWS certifications in platform or solutions architecture - Experience writing architecture decision records, runbooks, or engineering standards
