About this role
Role overview A principal software engineer is sought to provide technical leadership for location and geospatial services inside a large property-data platform. The role carries broad architectural influence across multiple teams and is responsible for shaping the scalability, correctness, and operational quality of location-based systems. It pairs deep individual technical contribution with cross-team strategy, mentorship, and roadmap influence at the platform level.
Responsibilities
- Own and evolve the architecture of core location services and geospatial capabilities. - Lead system design for highly scalable, low-latency, and highly available location-based services. - Define standards and best practices for geospatial data modelling, querying, and processing, and evaluate new technologies where they add material value. - Serve as technical owner for critical geospatial components and guide teams through complex, multi-service initiatives. - Partner with product, data, and infrastructure teams to align technical direction with business priorities, reduce architectural fragmentation, and influence the roadmap. - Drive improvements in observability, resilience, and fault tolerance, and lead root-cause analysis for significant production issues. - Champion automation, testing strategies, and reliability engineering practices across the area. - Mentor senior and mid-level engineers and set a high bar for system design quality and documentation.
Requirements
- At least ten years of professional software engineering experience with demonstrated senior technical leadership. - Deep experience designing and operating large-scale distributed systems. - Strong expertise in geospatial concepts, including spatial data models and indexing, geospatial queries, transformations and projections, and location accuracy and data quality. - Proficiency in one or more backend languages such as Java, C++, or Python. - Experience building and operating cloud-native services on GCP, AWS, or Azure, plus strong knowledge of data storage technologies including relational, NoSQL, time-series, or geospatial databases. - Proven ability to influence technical direction across teams without direct authority, with clear communication of complex trade-offs to diverse audiences.
Nice to have
- Prior ownership of location-based or geospatial platforms in production. - Experience with real-time or near-real-time location processing pipelines and geospatial tooling or standards. - Familiarity with containerisation and orchestration such as Docker and Kubernetes. - Background in reliability engineering, performance tuning, and scalability testing, or experience guiding architecture in a platform or shared-services organisation.
