Remote job
Senior Backend Engineer-Mobile App (f/m/x) - remote
Job details
About this role
Role overview A senior backend engineer is needed to design and run the services that power a European refurbished-goods marketplace mobile app. The role sits in an app-focused product squad within a remote-first engineering organisation and blends hands-on service development with cross-team technical influence. The ideal hire combines deep Go expertise with a working understanding of how native mobile apps consume backend APIs, and can guide other squads on mobile-aware design decisions.
Responsibilities
- Design, build, and maintain core APIs and backend services that support a high-traffic marketplace and its mobile client. - Own production operations and monitoring for the services the role contributes to. - Act as a mobile-aware voice across squads, reviewing designs and API changes from other teams and flagging constraints early. - Integrate third-party systems and APIs into the platform. - Lead end-to-end design and implementation of new features and services, occasionally extending changes into the frontend layer. - Identify and propose engineering best practices and standards for the wider department, supported by clear documentation and diagrams. - Mentor more junior engineers and contribute to onboarding new joiners.
Requirements
- At least seven years of experience designing and building scalable backend services in a production environment. - Strong proficiency in Go and a deep understanding of distributed systems and service-oriented architecture. - Comfort with JavaScript or TypeScript, or confidence picking up Node.js quickly. - Practical exposure to a team that ships and maintains a native mobile app, including understanding of mobile API design, versioning, latency, offline behaviour, and release cycles. - Solid SQL and relational database design skills, plus general familiarity with frontend fundamentals. - Self-starter mindset with strong ownership, clear and respectful communication, and a collaborative, low-ego approach. - Based in a European time zone with excellent English and a degree in computer science or equivalent experience.
Nice to have
- Existing Node.js experience alongside Go. - Comfort reviewing designs and guiding engineers outside your own squad, with potential to grow into broader technical leadership.
Benefits and work setup
- Fully remote across Europe, with optional access to a city-centre office and three annual office weeks for team building. - Departmental learning budget for courses or conferences, plus internal workshops. - Access to private expert sessions for personal growth and mental health support, and flexible self-organised working hours.
