Forward Deployed Engineer

Role overview This is a founding Forward Deployed Engineer position on a remote team based in Canada, reporting directly to the CTO. The role partners with an Implementation Consultant and the SaaS platform development team to onboard public-sector customers onto a permitting and community development platform, owning the technical side of onboarding from legacy data extraction through production cutover. The hire will define the playbook, runbooks, and technical bar for future Forward Deployed Engineers, with an engineering-led, tooling-driven delivery model measured in weeks rather than months.

Responsibilities - Lead end-to-end technical onboarding for new customers: legacy data extraction, field and workflow mapping, transformation authoring, staging dry-runs, delta review, and production cutover with full data-integrity guarantees - Triage customer requirements alongside the Implementation Consultant into configuration, new product functionality, or custom code, weighing scalability and reusability for each path - Translate how municipal jurisdictions actually operate into product configuration, including case types, workflows, fees, templates, and permissions, by working directly with city staff, clerks, and building officials - Write production code for migration transformations, integration adapters (GIS/parcel, payments, SSO via SAML and OIDC), and one-off extraction tooling against legacy systems - Coordinate with customer-side technical stakeholders such as IT directors, GIS teams, security reviewers, and identity teams, including SSO setup with municipal Entra or Okta tenants - Capture every manual workaround as a concrete spec for tooling or product capability, and build the FDE playbook, runbooks, mapping templates, extraction scripts, and estimation models so subsequent hires can ramp quickly

Requirements - Strong software engineering skills with the ability to write and maintain real production code in addition to configuration work - Hands-on experience with data migration, transformation authoring, and integration work against legacy systems - Familiarity with SSO standards such as SAML and OIDC, and identity platforms like Entra ID and Okta - Comfort working directly with non-technical municipal stakeholders and translating their operational reality into technical designs - Ability to operate independently as a first-in-role hire, setting patterns and standards rather than following pre-existing ones - Legal authorization to work in Canada or the US

Nice to have - Experience applying AI tools to implementation or migration work, and a demonstrated interest in shaping how AI is used across the deployment function - Background in permitting, licensing, community development, or other regulated public-sector software domains - Experience building reusable tooling, runbooks, or playbooks that scale beyond a single engagement
