About this role

Role overview Two remote Software Engineering Intern positions are available for the fall semester, exclusively for current students at Waterloo University. One role focuses on data-intensive systems and AI-powered services, while the other focuses on shipping privacy and security features inside a Chromium-based browser used by 115M+ people. Interns join a globally distributed team and contribute to production code, working on flexible schedules that fit their coursework.

Responsibilities (Data and AI track) - Build and maintain ETL pipelines that ingest, transform, and load structured and unstructured data across internal systems. - Develop backend services and tooling in Python and TypeScript for data workflows and API integrations. - Integrate and optimize LLM inference pipelines, including prompt engineering, model serving, and evaluation of model outputs. - Deploy and manage containerized workloads on Kubernetes, including manifests, autoscaling configuration, and cluster troubleshooting. - Collaborate with cross-functional teams to improve data quality, pipeline reliability, and system observability.

Responsibilities (Privacy track) - Prototype, implement, and ship privacy-enhancing features end-to-end in C++ or Rust inside a Chromium-based browser. - Build browser-native privacy protections such as enhanced permissions and anti-fingerprinting defenses. - Navigate a large, complex codebase, applying knowledge of the web security model and Chromium architecture. - Work with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript to develop and validate browser features. - Collaborate asynchronously with a globally distributed open-source team using Git and GitHub.

Requirements - Current enrollment at Waterloo University. - For the data and AI track: proficiency with Python and TypeScript, familiarity with Kubernetes, and comfort with LLM and data engineering concepts. - For the privacy track: strong C++ or Rust skills, working knowledge of web technologies, and comfort contributing to a large open-source codebase. - Ability to collaborate asynchronously across time zones.
