About this role
Role overview Join the Datastore team powering a precision medicine platform for brain physiology. This senior backend role focuses on designing and scaling core data infrastructure - PostgreSQL schemas, Kafka event pipelines, and a GraphQL API - that underwrites clinical and scientific workflows for neurological, psychiatric, and sleep disorder research. The work centers on data integrity, system soundness, and building reliable services rather than frontend or end-user surfaces.
Responsibilities - Design and evolve PostgreSQL data models, hand-written SQL, indexes, and query plans to support scientific and clinical data use cases - Build and own Kafka-driven event pipelines, ensuring correctness (completeness, idempotency) under partial failure when data moves between systems - Extend a GraphQL API (TypeScript/JavaScript on Node.js) to expose data and unlock new analytical and clinical workflows - Lead the delivery of dataset snapshots into the data warehouse, collaborating with platform and application teams on new integrations - Draft RFCs to align complex feature design across product, scientific, and clinical stakeholders, then implement with attention to data integrity and maintainability - Improve operational robustness through documentation, tools, and dashboards informed by internal and partner feedback
Requirements - 5+ years of backend development, including at least 2 years on data platforms and infrastructure for data-centric applications - Strong SQL proficiency with production PostgreSQL experience - comfortable designing schemas, indexes, and reasoning about query behavior - Hands-on experience with Kafka or comparable event streaming systems (RabbitMQ, Pulsar, Kinesis, etc.) - Proficiency in Python or Julia - Experience deploying services in containerized environments (Kubernetes, Terraform, Helm) - GraphQL experience with TypeScript/JavaScript (Node.js) - Collaborative mindset and strong written/verbal communication suited to async, remote work
Nice to have - Prior Julia experience (willingness to learn counts) - Familiarity with clinical, life sciences, or healthcare data contexts - Track record thriving in hybrid or fully remote teams
Benefits and work setup - Fully remote anywhere in the US, with optional in-person office hubs available - Robust asynchronous work practices - Base salary range: $150,000 – $170,000, adjusted for experience, skills, and location - Equity, PTO, and additional benefits included in the total compensation package
