Design Lead, Foundations

Role overview

Lead the design foundations for a growing product organization that builds software for the insurance claims industry. This role shapes the shared systems, patterns, and standards that every product team builds on, going well beyond a component library to define how the organization designs and ships cohesive, high-craft experiences. It's a senior, hands-on leadership position that combines systems thinking with strong visual and interaction design.

Responsibilities

- Own and evolve the design system, consolidating fragmented patterns into a unified foundation used across the company. - Define interaction patterns, visual standards, and accessibility guidelines that keep product experiences cohesive and well crafted. - Partner with brand, product, and engineering teams to align visual expression with how products are actually built and used. - Build tools, documentation, and ways of working that enable other designers and PMs to ship quality work faster. - Explore how AI-assisted tooling and modern workflows can speed design iteration and reduce repetitive effort. - Raise the bar for craft, consistency, and accessibility across every customer-facing surface.

Requirements

- Substantial product design experience, including meaningful ownership of a design system or platform-level foundations. - Strong interaction and visual design skills with high attention to craft and detail. - Systems-thinking mindset with the ability to translate complexity into clear, scalable solutions. - Technical fluency to collaborate deeply with engineering on turning design systems into real, scalable product infrastructure. - Track record of partnering across brand and product disciplines to connect expression with function. - Comfortable leading without heavy process, setting direction while staying hands-on.
