About this role

Role overview Own the correctness of AI-driven underwriting rules and pre-underwrite outputs for a digital mortgage origination platform. This underwriting-expert-first role pairs deep mortgage expertise with hands-on AI fluency, ensuring every automated rule and agent decision stays faithful to agency guides and lender-specific overlays.

Responsibilities - Review, test, and verify AI-generated underwriting rules against agency guides and each investor's guidelines and overlays; approve rules before release and re-verify as guidelines evolve. - Work directly with lender credit and underwriting teams and agencies to confirm rule accuracy, reconcile interpretation differences, and maintain lender-specific rule sets as the source of truth. - Own pre-underwrite outputs end-to-end, auditing findings, checklists, conditions, and autonomous issue resolutions for accuracy on real loan files. - Direct rule treatment across income, asset, credit, and collateral underwriting for agency and non-QM programs. - Partner daily with platform engineers to refine agent prompts, build evaluation datasets, design human-in-the-loop review, and validate agent behavior on real files. - Monitor agency and lender guideline updates and drive timely, verified rule changes to prevent drift from current policy.

Requirements - Ten or more years of experience in mortgage underwriting and/or agency credit policy, with a Bachelor's or Master's degree considered a strong plus. - Mastery of agency guidelines including the Fannie Mae Selling Guide, Freddie Mac Seller/Servicer Guide, and FHA Handbook 4000.1; VA and USDA experience valued, and non-QM experience strongly preferred. - Wholesale, TPO, or correspondent lending background strongly preferred, with a track record of collaborating with lender underwriters, account executives, and setup teams. - Working knowledge of AI and LLM platforms, including the ability to review prompts, reason about agent behavior, and contribute to evaluations. - Familiarity with modern underwriting technology such as AUS, income and asset verification tools, and AI rules or analysis engines. - Willingness to travel approximately 20% to a California office and to lender and agency partners; Bay Area-local candidates able to work from the office regularly are a strong plus.

Benefits and work setup - Remote role with core Pacific Time working hours. - Base salary range of $160,000 to $200,000 plus a 15% target performance-based bonus and eligibility for performance-based equity. - Comprehensive health, dental, and vision coverage, 401(k) with employer match, and flexible PTO.
