Job details
About this role
Role overview Lead product design for workforce software used to coordinate time-critical staffing, with a focus on making complex scheduling work faster and more reliable. The contract spans new AI-enabled product areas and an established platform, combining end-to-end design, customer research, and close delivery work with product and engineering colleagues.
Responsibilities - Take over design work already in progress, learn prior decisions quickly, and keep delivery moving. - Lead end-to-end design for new AI-focused experiences while refining existing product workflows. - Design clear user controls and states for AI decisions, including confidence, errors, and ways for users to review or override outcomes. - Create connected flows, interaction patterns, and visual interfaces, and contribute components to a design system. - Use prototypes, evidence, and clear rationale to align product, engineering, and stakeholders on design decisions. - Plan and facilitate customer discovery sessions, synthesize findings with the team, and prepare follow-up summaries.
Requirements - 7+ years in product design, primarily on complex B2B or enterprise software, with a portfolio showing work from discovery through launch. - Strong interaction design and systems thinking for multi-step workflows, plus polished visual design for information-dense interfaces. - Good judgment about design quality and delivery constraints, with the ability to explain tradeoffs. - A record of influencing product and engineering teams through clear reasoning and of joining ongoing work to make progress quickly. - Strong research and facilitation skills, including work with frontline or operational users in person. - Hands-on experience designing AI features and working in AI-assisted design and development workflows. - Experience building design system components and clear written communication.
Nice to have - Familiarity with workforce management, scheduling, healthcare operations, or other rule-heavy systems. - Experience with unionized, healthcare, or manufacturing workforces, or with high-volume mobile products for frontline staff.
Benefits and work setup - Independent contract for 4–6 months initially, at 4–5 days per week, with an option to extend; monthly invoicing against agreed deliverables. - Remote in Canada, with overlap in Central or Mountain time and occasional travel for customer discovery. - Use personal equipment; access to design tools, development workflow, and relevant repositories is provided. Weekly product leadership check-ins and regular design reviews are part of the engagement.
