Design Lead, Design Systems - Freelance

Role overview

This freelance Design Lead role guides a team of designers supporting a flagship digital product experience for one of the most recognized consumer brands in the world. The position centers on leading the evolution of complex design systems while shaping creative vision from early concept through final delivery. It is a remote, full-time contract engagement running from ASAP through March 30, 2027, with regular onsite client visits.

Responsibilities

- Provide hands-on creative direction and leadership for designers working on a high-traffic consumer digital product - Oversee the creation, maintenance, and evolution of complex design systems, with attention to scalability, consistency, and craft - Shape the creative vision for digital platforms and align it with user needs and business goals - Partner closely with UX, strategy, and development teams to deliver cohesive, integrated solutions - Present and defend creative concepts to clients and stakeholders with clarity and strategic framing - Mentor and support designers at varying levels, fostering accountability and professional growth

Requirements

- Six or more years of experience in UI design, art direction, or a closely related discipline, supported by a portfolio of digital platforms and products - Demonstrated success leading and mentoring designers on complex digital experiences - Deep expertise building, scaling, and evolving design systems - Strong working knowledge of user interface, application, mobile, and responsive design principles - Expert proficiency in Figma, including advanced component and library management - Strong communication and presentation skills, with confidence defending creative decisions
