About this role

Role overview A nonprofit focused on AI literacy education is hiring a part-time Software Engineer to build and safeguard the technical foundation of its external-facing web products. The role combines hands-on full-stack engineering with security leadership and internal mentorship, helping a small team ship reliable tools to tens of thousands of educators and partners each year. It is a remote, U.S.-based position with a flexible schedule, paying $150 per hour for up to 25 hours per week, and is not benefits-eligible.

Responsibilities - Partner with product managers to ensure every externally released product meets standards for reliability, accessibility, error handling, performance, and security, and review changes before they go live. - Build shared technical resources (templates, authentication patterns, environment setup) and stand up monitoring, alerts, and backups for new launches; retire products that are no longer in use. - Audit web products for vulnerabilities, harden backend configurations across Supabase and Vercel environments, manage credentials and secrets hygiene, and maintain the GitHub organization's security posture. - Serve as first responder for security incidents, including triage, remediation, and documentation, and partner with data and operations leaders on data controls, audit logging, backup, retention, and deletion practices. - Design lightweight guardrails for AI-assisted development so non-technical colleagues can experiment responsibly, and write runbooks and documentation that non-engineers can actually follow. - Mentor teammates over time, raising overall technical judgment so the organization is less reliant on a single engineer.

Requirements - Three to five years of software engineering experience spanning backend, infrastructure, and security work. - Full-stack fluency strong enough to take an existing prototype and make it production-ready for relatively simple web products. - Hands-on experience securing production databases such as Supabase or comparable platforms, including access control design. - Working knowledge of modern web hosting platforms like Vercel or Netlify and how to configure them securely. - Practical experience with credential management, API security, and authentication patterns. - Demonstrated ability to explain technical concepts clearly to non-technical stakeholders and write documentation people will actually use, plus comfort operating autonomously in a small organization.

Nice to have - Familiarity with the education sector and student data privacy requirements.

Benefits and work setup - Part-time, non-exempt role at $150 per hour, up to 25 hours per week. - Fully remote within the U.S. with a flexible schedule; high-speed internet required. - Not eligible for benefits; start date is as soon as possible after offer, with some flexibility.
