About this role

This staff-level role combines architecture and hands-on engineering with operational ownership, cross-team planning, and mentorship on a small, senior team.
Responsibilities - Define a technical strategy and delivery plans for major platform capabilities and migrations. - Design services with clear API boundaries and dependable behavior under retries, failures, and consistency challenges. - Work with product, design, analytics, and engineering partners to weigh risks and trade-offs across the product lifecycle. - Improve service availability through monitoring, testing, alerting, incident playbooks, and on-call practices. - Set design and code review standards, share technical guidance, and mentor engineers.
Requirements - At least 8 years designing, building, and launching backend systems at scale, with experience in languages such as Python or Kotlin. - A strong track record building highly available distributed systems; relevant technologies may include AWS, MySQL, Spark, and Kubernetes. - Sound judgment around service boundaries, reliability, consistency, idempotency, and failure handling; experience in payments, commerce, ledgers, or another financially sensitive domain is especially relevant. - Experience planning and delivering major features or system components, including retiring existing functionality, and writing maintainable code. - Ability to work through ambiguity, from language-level details to large-system architecture, and to incorporate peer feedback. - Strong written and verbal communication; a related bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience.
Benefits and work setup - Remote-first within the country of employment, with occasional office needs possible and in-person onboarding for new hires. - The listed U.S. annual base salary ranges from $204,000 to $264,000 in most states, and $230,000 to $290,000 in California, Washington, New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut. Compensation depends on location, experience, and skills. - The package may include equity, health and wellness and technology stipends, medical, dental, and vision coverage, flexible time off, holidays, and an employee stock purchase plan.
