Remote job
Staff Software Engineer, Backend (Capacity Modeling)
Job details
About this role
Role overview
Lead backend engineering strategy for capacity modeling that helps a large-scale service handle forecast demand and peak traffic reliably. The team turns forecasts for activity such as checkout, app usage, and background jobs into resource plans across compute, databases, caches, regions, and environments. The role combines technical direction, hands-on systems work, and operational leadership.
Responsibilities - Set the team’s technical strategy over a year-long horizon and connect it to high-impact business projects. - Build and evolve statistical capacity models that translate traffic forecasts into resource requirements and recommended infrastructure settings. - Work across product, design, analytics, and engineering teams to surface technical risks, sustainability concerns, and tradeoffs. - Improve operational readiness through monitoring, alerts, testing, on-call practices, triage rotations, and response playbooks. - Establish code review and design standards, communicate engineering practices through writing or talks, and mentor teammates.
Requirements - At least eight years designing, building, and launching large-scale backend systems, with experience in languages such as Python or Kotlin. - Strong background in highly available distributed systems; experience with cloud infrastructure, relational databases, data processing, and container orchestration is relevant. - Experience preparing systems to scale for major traffic events, such as seasonal or promotional sales peaks. - Knowledge of autoscaling, CPU and memory tuning, and multithreading for compute-intensive workloads. - Ability to plan and deliver major system changes, write maintainable code, and move between low-level implementation and system architecture. - Strong collaboration and communication skills, including experience using peer feedback to improve engineering impact; related degree or equivalent practical experience.
