Senior Software Engineer, backend (Online Storage)
Job details
About this role
Role overview
Develop and operate managed database infrastructure that provides persistent storage for a broad range of services and workloads. The focus is large-scale relational and distributed SQL systems: automating their lifecycle, carrying out safe changes across multi-tenant clusters, and keeping service-to-storage connections reliable and fast.
Responsibilities
- Build and run database control-plane capabilities for provisioning, failover, backups, and upgrades. - Plan and execute schema and data migrations across multi-tenant clusters while maintaining service continuity. - Own and tune the Kubernetes networking layer between applications and databases, including connection proxies, for latency and resilience. - Set team goals, lead delivery through ambiguous problems, and collaborate with product and analytics partners on designs and trade-offs. - Track service health, support operational availability and on-call work, and improve engineering standards. - Mentor teammates and share technical practices through reviews, writing, or talks.
Requirements
- At least 5 years of software engineering experience. - Hands-on experience operating large-scale production database deployments and designing backend systems at scale. - Strong knowledge of distributed database architecture, data modeling, SQL tuning, and performance optimization. - Experience with backend and infrastructure technologies such as Python or Kotlin, AWS, MySQL, Terraform, and Kubernetes. - Ability to plan and safely deliver significant changes in a large codebase; strong written and verbal communication. - A related bachelor’s degree or equivalent practical experience.
Nice to have
- Experience with MySQL or TiDB, or comparable distributed database systems such as PostgreSQL, Spanner, Vitess, or CockroachDB. - The source also mentions database benchmarking and load testing.
Benefits and work setup
- Remote role limited to candidates living in Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, Ontario, Prince Edward Island, or Saskatchewan. - The source describes health coverage for employees and dependents, monthly technology and wellness stipends, flexible time off, and an employee stock purchase plan.
