About this role
Role overview A remote role based in specific Canadian provinces for a senior backend engineer to help build the high-throughput decision engine at the core of a card loan platform, where each pay-later transaction is backed by its own loan. The work focuses on designing and operating large-scale distributed services that match fragmented payment-network data to the correct loan in real time. It involves close collaboration with product, analytics, design, legal, and accounting teams to shape the long-term money-movement platform.
Responsibilities - Drive technical strategy by leading planning, prioritization, and execution of projects aligned with product, technical, and business goals. - Lead end-to-end system design and development of large-scale, high-availability services, including APIs and data models for microservices and event-driven architectures. - Collaborate cross-functionally with Product, Analytics, Design, Legal, and Accounting to define requirements and execute card loan attribution and lifecycle strategy. - Ensure system health and performance by analyzing and troubleshooting complex technical issues, optimizing existing code, and driving long-term scalability and robustness. - Mentor and grow the team by guiding junior engineers, leading technical discussions and design reviews, and championing best practices through code review.
Requirements - 5+ years of software development or engineering experience with deep system design and architecture knowledge. - Proven ability to lead projects, inspire team growth, and foster a culture of continuous learning. - Excellent communication skills for sharing complex ideas with diverse audiences. - Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a creative, solution-oriented mindset. - Proficiency in modern languages such as Python, Kotlin, or similar. - Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud) and containerization (Docker, Kubernetes). - Knowledge of SQL and NoSQL databases, web frameworks, and RESTful API development. - Equivalent practical experience or a Bachelor's degree in a related field. - Must reside in Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, Ontario, Prince Edward Island, or Saskatchewan.
Nice to have - Background in fintech, payments, lending, or other regulated financial services. - Experience with event-driven architectures, distributed systems, and high-throughput, low-latency services.
Benefits and work setup - Remote-first role for candidates in eligible Canadian provinces; new hires attend an in-person onboarding experience. - Canada base pay range: $153,000–$213,000 CAD, plus equity, monthly stipends for health, wellness, and tech, and benefits including subsidized medical, dental, and vision coverage. - Flexible time off, generous holiday calendars, and an employee stock purchase plan.
