Remote job
Sr. Engineer, Database Reliability
Job details
About this role
Role overview Set technical direction for the reliability of a production data platform, combining hands-on operations with guidance for teams that depend on it. The senior engineer will shape how relational databases and caching are automated, monitored, tuned, and recovered, while making safe and reliable data services easier for product engineers to use. The role also serves as a technical resource for database and cache design and helps strengthen the team’s reliability practices over time.
Responsibilities - Guide the design and operation of relational database and caching services, including MySQL, PostgreSQL, Redis, and ElastiCache environments. - Improve automation, observability, performance, reliability, and disaster recovery for the data platform. - Review database and cache designs, offering product teams options and explaining workload-specific tradeoffs. - Operate cloud infrastructure as code and support stateful services alongside Kubernetes or other distributed systems. - Build and maintain useful metrics, logs, alerts, and performance signals, including query health, replication lag, and cache hit rates. - Participate in production data on-call and support requests; document practices and coach teams to resolve recurring issues independently.
Requirements - At least 7 years in systems administration, systems engineering, or software development, including 4 or more years operating production relational databases. - Deep expertise in either MySQL or PostgreSQL and working knowledge of the other, including relevant ecosystem tools and extensions. - Understanding of Redis-style caching at scale and the tradeoffs between cache design and the underlying database. - Experience designing and maintaining highly available cloud databases in AWS or another cloud, using Terraform or comparable infrastructure-as-code tools. - Experience operating data services around Kubernetes or distributed systems and understanding the operational tradeoffs. - Ability to build observability for data services with tools such as Datadog, Prometheus, or CloudWatch. - Strong customer partnership skills: investigate workloads, communicate tradeoffs, provide support, document decisions, and teach other engineers.
Benefits and work setup The source describes the organization as fully remote. Formal education is not required; the hiring process asks candidates to provide their most recent educational experience for a background check if they receive an offer.
