Openstack Infrastructure Engineer

Role overview This role focuses on building, operating, and scaling an OpenStack-based compute and storage platform that powers a web hosting service. The engineer will be hands-on across Linux systems, virtualization, and distributed storage, working in a remote-friendly infrastructure team located in South Africa.

Responsibilities - Design, build, and maintain OpenStack compute and storage infrastructure at scale, including capacity planning and performance tuning - Operate and troubleshoot Ceph or similar distributed storage systems, addressing replication, failure domains, recovery, and latency issues - Manage data-centre-grade hardware, including enterprise servers, CPUs, memory, storage media, NICs, firmware, and out-of-band management - Configure and maintain physical and virtual networks using OVN, OVS, BGP underlays, LACP, IPv4, and IPv6 - Apply infrastructure-as-code practices with Ansible, Terraform, and related tooling, while monitoring the stack with Prometheus and Grafana - Diagnose issues spanning compute, storage, networking, databases, message queues, containers, hypervisors, and guest workloads

Requirements - Significant experience operating open-source infrastructure systems, with senior-level depth expected for complex environments - Hands-on OpenStack implementation, operations, or troubleshooting experience - Practical knowledge of Ceph or comparable distributed storage, plus capacity and performance management - Strong Linux systems administration and troubleshooting skills - Familiarity with data-centre hardware and how power, cooling, rack layout, and component failure affect reliability - Networking fundamentals covering virtual and physical cloud networks, with Juniper experience considered a plus

Nice to have - Experience with a reasonable number of the existing toolchain items (Ubuntu Linux, Ansible, OpenStack, Ceph, Terraform, Rundeck, LXC, Nspawn, OVN, OVS, BGP, JunOS, LACP, Docker, Prometheus, Grafana, Git, Jira) - An SRE mindset focused on reducing failure probability and recovery time, paired with a security-minded approach to automation and access control
