About this role
Role overview The Compute Capacity team owns the forward-looking plan that keeps compute supply ahead of demand across multiple regions and instance families. The work spans forecasting, buffer policy, reservation acquisition, fleet reconciliation, and the automation that keeps committed capacity in lockstep with what is actually running. The engineer in this seat designs and operates robust, highly automated systems that hold the right buffer at the right cost and surface capacity risks on vendor lead time rather than at the moment of impact.
Responsibilities - Maintain the capacity plan that keeps compute supply ahead of demand across regions and instance families - Model headroom targets and their cost tradeoffs to inform buffer policy review and sign-off - Build and operate automation that turns the capacity plan into provisioned reality, including reservation acquisition, fleet reconciliation, and drift detection between committed and running capacity - Extend infrastructure-as-code coverage for capacity-relevant provisioning - Instrument capacity health with metrics for saturation, reservation coverage, idle buffer, forecast error, and provisioning latency - Tune alerting so headroom, quota, and reservation issues surface months before they bite - Support the demand intake gate for large customer commitments, launches, migrations, and new regions - Contribute to mitigation work such as right-sizing, instance-family migrations, autoscaling improvements, and workload consolidation - Help drive down compute cost per database through right-sizing, placement, and commitment coverage - Participate in capacity incident response and post-incident follow-through
Requirements - 5+ years across infrastructure engineering, SRE, platform, or capacity engineering, ideally at SaaS or cloud-infrastructure scale - Production software engineering experience, including ownership of a running service rather than just modeling work - Comfort in modern languages such as TypeScript, Python, and Go - Comfort working against incomplete forecasts and assumptions, with the ability to revise as those assumptions change - Hands-on experience with Infrastructure as Code tooling such as Pulumi or Terraform - Experience building or maintaining observability, including metrics that answer real questions and alerting that earns trust, using Prometheus, Grafana, CloudWatch, or comparable tooling - Solid working knowledge of AWS EC2, including instance families and generations, purchase options, capacity reservations, and quota mechanics - Financial fluency around reservation economics and the tradeoffs between coverage, utilization, and cost - Clear written communication with both engineers and finance stakeholders
Nice to have - Background supporting mitigation projects such as right-sizing campaigns or autoscaling improvements - Familiarity with demand forecasting under high-growth or rapidly changing workloads
