About this role

Role overview

You’ll improve automated customer support by evaluating and advancing AI systems that handle voice and digital conversations. The work spans research and production: building agents that can serve millions of interactions while remaining useful in settings with unreliable connectivity, low literacy, and limited language data.

Responsibilities

- Assess the quality of automated support and identify where systems need improvement. - Build and ship agent systems in collaboration with product and engineering teams. - Develop voice and digital agents for high-volume customer interactions. - Experiment with, evaluate, and integrate voice and text models. - Take problems from discovery through production operation and monitoring. - Design for challenging edge cases, including low-resource languages and poor connectivity.

Requirements

- At least five years of AI or machine learning experience. - Practical experience building with large language models or AI systems, including evaluation, retrieval-augmented generation, embeddings, or safety controls. - Strong foundations in statistics and machine learning theory. - Solid Python programming skills. - Experience taking AI or machine learning systems from prototype to production, with attention to reliability, performance, and scale. - Fluency with AI agents; experience deploying them in production is a plus.

Nice to have

- Research experience in speech or language models, or hands-on voice AI work such as speech recognition, speech synthesis, streaming, latency optimization, or voice agents. - Experience with customer support or conversational AI, low-resource languages, or agents in high-risk settings such as finance. - Ability to translate current speech and language research into production improvements. - English fluency; French is an added advantage.

Benefits and work setup

- Fully remote, with candidates based in specified talent hubs or operating markets in Africa. - Up to three funded in-person team gatherings per year, subject to travel policy. - Compensation varies by level and location; the source lists a range of $167,000–$227,900 USD plus equity. - Health insurance support for employees and dependents, and retirement contributions, with terms varying by country. - Six months of paid parental leave, fertility assistance, flexible vacation, and annual charitable donation matching.
