Staff Software Engineer, Applied AI
Job details
About this role
Role overview Provide technical leadership for customer-facing AI and workflow capabilities, translating complex needs into reliable software that helps users complete real work. The role spans discovery, architecture, implementation guidance, evaluation, and production quality, with close collaboration across product, design, engineering, customers, and domain experts.
Responsibilities - Map customer workflows, including triggers, participants, evidence, decisions, exceptions, and handoffs, then translate them into implementable steps. - Build AI-assisted product capabilities, typed tools, service integrations, and workflow orchestration within an existing application. - Extend shared foundations for reliable orchestration, resumable tasks, grounded retrieval, and human approvals. - Break opportunities into deliverable increments, coordinate dependencies, and guide implementation across teams. - Design realistic evaluations that cover correctness, missing information, permissions, exceptions, and recovery from failure. - Measure customer outcomes and address production concerns such as latency, cost, observability, safe rollout, prompt injection, and unauthorized actions.
Requirements - Record of delivering customer-facing software and leading significant technical work across teams or services. - Hands-on experience building production AI applications that retrieve information, use tools, or coordinate multi-step work. - Strong software engineering skills, including APIs, structured contracts, asynchronous execution, testing, and observability. - Ability to connect AI features to application state and authorized actions, and to distinguish deterministic logic, AI assistance, and human decisions. - Experience evaluating AI quality and investigating failures caused by incomplete data, ambiguity, or unreliable outputs. - Ability to work with customers and domain experts to clarify needs and define bounded, testable solutions. - Clear communication and a collaborative approach to raising the effectiveness of other engineers.
Benefits and work setup - Remote-first working environment, flexible paid time off, and professional development support. - Health, dental, and vision coverage from the first day, disability and basic life insurance, and a retirement plan with a 4% match. - The role may require eligibility as a U.S. person under federal law because of access to regulated infrastructure data or systems.
