Staff Software Engineer

Role overview

A staff-level Android engineering role providing technical leadership for mobile apps that support public safety workflows, including dispatch, law enforcement, forensics, and courts. The role blends deep Android expertise with architectural vision, guiding engineers from concept through release while integrating with connected hardware such as drones and body-worn cameras.

Responsibilities

- Provide strategic guidance and mentorship to Android engineers, fostering innovation, code quality, and technical excellence. - Lead the design and architecture of complex Android apps, ensuring scalability, reliability, and overall performance. - Integrate robotics into mission workflows, ranging from airborne drones to body-worn cameras, alongside other connected peripherals. - Work closely with internal and external partners to align technical solutions with business objectives, including integrating backend services over REST and WebRTC while maintaining offline-first behavior. - Support a range of hardware configurations, from ordinary smartphones to headless single-board computers. - Stay current with Android platform changes, dependency upgrades, and emerging app technologies, including awareness of adjacent platforms such as Fire OS and iOS. - Oversee CI/CD pipelines and release processes, continuously improving automation, tooling, and practices. - Maintain comprehensive documentation of app architecture, engineering decisions, and development standards.

Requirements

- Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent industry experience. - Minimum of eight years of Android development experience, including acting as a technical lead for a team. - Proven track record collaborating with team members focused on problem decomposition and reducing friction for customers and engineers. - Proficiency in Kotlin with hands-on experience in Jetpack libraries such as CameraX and Compose. - Solid understanding of asynchronous and reactive programming using Flows or RxJava. - Familiarity with the Firebase platform, including Cloud Messaging and Crashlytics. - Exposure to project management and CI/CD tools such as GitHub or GitLab. - Ability to articulate technical concepts to varied technical and non-technical stakeholders. - Willingness to comply with FBI Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) Security Policy, including successful passage of a fingerprint-based background check.

Nice to have

- Experience with connected hardware and IoT peripherals or retail terminals. - Familiarity with online mapping technologies such as ArcGIS or Mapbox. - Knowledge of networking technologies such as MQTT and WebRTC. - Experience leading or working with geographically dispersed engineering teams. - FAA or Transport Canada remote pilot certification with flight experience. - Hands-on use of AI tooling in development workflows.
