Remote job
Staff AI Engineer
Job details
About this role
Role overview
A staff AI engineer is being recruited to set the technical direction for a core AI team building generative AI, AI agent, and deep learning capabilities within a digital metabolic health platform. This is a senior individual contributor role focused on system-level architecture, shared tooling, and engineering standards rather than people management. The engineer will work on ambiguous, high-impact problems that span multiple product areas and influence how the broader team builds, evaluates, and ships AI.
Responsibilities
- Design and build the core architecture for AI systems spanning multiple product areas, ensuring coherence and reuse across applications.
- Set organizational technical standards, including evaluation frameworks, testing philosophy, CI/CD for model behavior, and shared infrastructure.
- Proactively identify and close systemic engineering gaps before they become widespread issues.
- Take end-to-end ownership of the hardest, most ambiguous technical problems, building novel solutions from scratch.
- Build and ship conversational agents, deep learning models, and personalization systems that require original technical approaches.
- Improve AI/ML systems that drive measurable behavior change and metabolic health improvements for members.
- Lead through code review and design review, raising the technical bar of the team without direct reports.
- Partner with product, engineering leadership, and clinical or research teams to translate ambiguous goals into concrete technical designs.
Requirements
- 8+ years of industry experience developing AI and ML systems in production, with a track record of leading technical initiatives across multiple teams or systems.
- Deep software engineering fundamentals, including testing, CI/CD, system design, and code review, plus hands-on experience designing evaluation infrastructure for LLM-based systems.
- Proven experience setting technical direction and engineering standards at an organizational level.
- Hands-on experience creating and scaling applications that use LLMs, Generative AI, advanced prompt engineering, RAG, and iterative AI evaluations in production.
- Track record of mentoring senior engineers and influencing technical decisions beyond a single project.
- Proficiency in Python and a track record of defining, not just following, engineering best practices.
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Statistics, or a related field; must be authorized to work in the US without visa sponsorship.
Nice to have
- Experience with Voice AI or specialized language models such as VLMs and multi-modal systems.
Benefits and work setup
- Compensation range of $250,000 to $265,000 annually.
- Remote US-based role with a distributed global team.
- Equity participation, unlimited vacation with manager approval, and 16 weeks of 100% paid parental leave for delivering parents (8 weeks for non-delivering parents).
- 100% employer-sponsored healthcare, dental, and vision for employees with 80% family coverage, HSA and FSA options, and a 401(k) retirement plan.
