Job details
About this role
Role overview
A senior engineering leadership role focused on modernising how an engineering organisation operates end to end. The position reports into the VP of Engineering and initially manages a team of up to eight engineers, with a mandate to help stand up the organisation's first proper layer of engineering management over the next two quarters. The split is roughly 40 percent hands-on technical work and 60 percent management, shifting as the team matures.
Responsibilities
- Contribute hands-on to code, architecture, and technical design while leading the team, with a target 40/60 individual contributor to management split. - Design and roll out modern engineering practices including CI/CD, automated testing, code review, feature flagging, and static code analysis. - Champion responsible adoption of AI-assisted development tools that lift engineer output and code quality without creating hidden technical debt. - Coach engineers through feedback and career development, including those newer to modern software development lifecycle practices. - Help shape clear expectations, ceremonies, and standards, and bring the team along with the reasoning behind them rather than imposing them top-down. - Foster a culture of psychological safety, collaboration, and continuous learning as part of a small engineering leadership group. - Support delivery from conception through production support on a quarterly cadence, partnering with Product and Design to translate business goals into clear technical plans. - Drive measurable improvements in engineering KPIs and communicate clearly across technical and non-technical audiences.
Requirements
- Eight or more years of professional software engineering experience, with three or more years managing engineering teams. - A track record of leading or driving a team that operates with real CI/CD, automated testing, and short release cycles. - Hands-on depth in some or all of C# and .NET, React, cloud-native systems design, modern CI/CD toolchains, or platform engineering. - Experience using AI-assisted development tools as part of a disciplined engineering practice. - Sound judgement balancing scope, quality, speed, and long-term technical health. - A collaborative, inclusive leadership style that creates psychological safety and empowers the team. - A habit of taking ownership and accountability for both individual and team outcomes, addressing challenges proactively and with integrity.
Nice to have
- Experience leading organisational change around modern SDLC practices, including moving teams from reactive delivery to sustainable end-to-end ownership. - Background working with engineering, product, and design leadership to evolve KPIs and operating rhythms.
Benefits and work setup
- US-based compensation range of $180,000 to $220,000, commensurate with experience and skills. - Equal opportunity employer with a stated policy of non-discrimination across protected categories and compliance with applicable employment laws.
