Quality Control Engineer, HD Mapping

Role overview A map enablement team building HD maps for autonomous trucks is hiring a Quality Control Engineer to audit geospatial datasets before they reach the vehicle. The role sits at the intersection of geospatial analysis, software-defined quality processes, and safety-critical autonomy work, focused on catching defects early and turning recurring issues into scalable workflow improvements.

Responsibilities - Review HD map data covering lane geometry, road boundaries, intersections, signage, and lane connectivity against internal quality specifications and ground-truth sources - Audit map features derived from LiDAR point clouds, aerial or satellite imagery, and vehicle-collected sensor data - Identify, document, and triage map defects, escalating safety-critical findings to mapping and autonomy engineering teams - Define and refine QC metrics, sampling strategies, and audit workflows that hold up as the mapping footprint grows - Partner with mapping vendors and internal teams to communicate quality standards and drive defect resolution - Analyze recurring defect patterns and feed insights back into upstream map creation and annotation processes - Maintain clear documentation of QC procedures, edge cases, and regional or route-specific requirements - Support readiness reviews for new lanes, corridors, or operational design domains prior to launch

Requirements - Bachelor's degree in GIS, Geomatics, Geography, Surveying, Civil Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience - 1–3 years (Engineer I) or 3–5 years (Engineer II) of experience in geospatial data QC, map production, GIS analysis, or a related quality or annotation role - Working knowledge of geospatial data formats such as shapefiles, GeoJSON, and KML, plus coordinate and projection systems - Familiarity with GIS tools (e.g., ArcGIS, QGIS) and LiDAR or point cloud viewers - Strong attention to detail when spotting subtle spatial or geometric inconsistencies in large datasets - Clear written communication for documenting defects and standards for technical and non-technical audiences - Comfort collaborating across engineering, operations, and external vendor teams

Nice to have - HD mapping experience for autonomous vehicles or trucking, especially highway or interstate corridors - Familiarity with autonomy map representations such as Lanelet2, OpenDRIVE, or OpenStreetMap - LiDAR processing or classification tools like TerraScan, TerraSolid, or LP360 - Scripting in Python or SQL to automate QC checks or build spatial queries (e.g., PostGIS) - Experience designing QC tooling from scratch, mentoring junior reviewers, or managing outsourced annotation teams - Exposure to functional safety or quality standards relevant to AV development such as ISO 26262 or ASPICE
