Software Engineer II, Android

Role overview A Software Engineer II on the Android Systems team will help build the foundational platform that powers point-of-sale devices. The role bridges hardware and software, supporting out-of-box setup, firmware updates, security controls, and ongoing device lifecycle management. Work centers on Android system applications that run reliably with little to no user interaction.

Responsibilities - Design and implement Android system applications in Java or Kotlin that power device management, policy enforcement, and firmware/app updates - Build features that emphasize background services and long-running reliability over user interface - Support bring-up of new hardware and OS upgrades, ensuring system apps work as expected across device types - Expand the end-to-end automated testing framework to validate apps against real hardware and reduce manual regression testing - Investigate and debug production issues across the device fleet - Collaborate with product, hardware, QA, and other software teams to build scalable systems - Make technical decisions with software quality, security, and maintainability in mind

Requirements - 3+ years of Android application development experience - Clear written and verbal communication - Proficiency in a modern object-oriented language such as Java or Kotlin - Experience with standard Android architecture patterns and libraries such as Hilt, AndroidX, and Kotlin Coroutines - Experience triaging issues with Android tools such as adb and logcat - Proficiency with source control and code review tools such as Git, Gerrit, or GitHub

Nice to have - Experience writing automated tests using Robot, UIAutomator, or other testing frameworks - Familiarity with AI-augmented development workflows and tools - Experience with the Android framework, system services, or system apps - Understanding of mobile device management concepts and enterprise device management platforms

Benefits and work setup Base salary ranges from $104,000 to $213,000 USD depending on geographic zone, with additional cash compensation (overtime, bonus, or commissions where eligible) and equity. The team operates on a hybrid model that supports in-person collaboration while valuing individual needs.
