Role overview
Build foundational retail technology for a fast-growing product area serving complex, high-volume operators such as grocery and convenience store chains. This senior software engineering role combines end-to-end product development with direct customer discovery, including store visits and conversations with operators, to shape integrations, back-office workflows, and scalable platform capabilities. The work also includes creating AI-native experiences that improve how customers use the product.
Responsibilities
- Partner with engineering and product leaders to identify high-value opportunities across the retail domain. - Plan, scope, design, prototype, and deliver features from initial concept through production rollout. - Consider complete user workflows and system behavior rather than limiting work to one part of the stack. - Make technical decisions that establish durable patterns and capabilities for future platform growth. - Gather feedback from retail operators, observe workflows in stores, and monitor broader industry developments. - Develop and launch AI-powered experiences while maintaining a strong focus on customer value and usability.
Requirements
- At least six years of experience building, testing, and shipping production software used by customers. - Professional experience with Java, Kotlin, or another object-oriented programming language. - Ability to work across different technologies and programming languages as project needs evolve. - Solid understanding of testing methodologies and testing frameworks. - A growth-oriented approach to learning, feedback, and continuous team improvement. - Comfort with ambiguity, an adaptable startup mindset, empathy, humility, and a strong interest in user satisfaction.
Nice to have
- Experience translating direct customer or operator feedback into product and technical priorities. - Interest in large-scale retail workflows, integrations, and back-office systems. - Enthusiasm for using emerging AI tools to improve software delivery and product quality.
Benefits and work setup
- The position can be remote anywhere in the United States or hybrid in Boston or New York; an Eastern Time schedule is preferred. - Base salary ranges from $125,000 to $254,000, depending on location, experience, and skills: - Zone A: $159,000–$254,000 - Zone B: $138,000–$221,000 - Zone C: $125,000–$200,000 - The compensation package may also include overtime, bonus or commission when eligible, equity, and benefits. - Hybrid work emphasizes in-person collaboration while retaining flexibility for individual working needs.
