Remote job
Staff Forward-Deployed Engineer
Job details
About this role
Role overview
Work as a senior, customer-facing engineer embedded with electric utilities and energy-hardware manufacturers from kickoff through production. The role combines technical discovery, implementation, integration, and product-minded architecture: you will turn unfamiliar customer requirements into reusable platform capabilities rather than isolated custom solutions. Much of the work involves connecting meters, sensors, and OEM devices, while also supporting energy accounting, bill-credit reporting, demand-response programs, data pipelines, and the infrastructure behind them.
Responsibilities
- Join delivery and implementation calls, uncover the underlying customer need, and lead technical discussions with customer stakeholders. - Own software work end to end, from understanding operational requirements through design, implementation, deployment, and production support. - Integrate data from new meters, sensors, and hardware vendors into a shared software platform. - Build reusable reference architectures so solutions developed for one customer can support similar future engagements. - Develop capabilities such as energy-accounting and bill-credit reporting, behavioral demand-response workflows, and the pipelines and infrastructure they depend on. - Evaluate new commercial opportunities by researching data classes, vendors, and control mechanisms, then recommend a platform fit, services engagement, or investment in a new capability.
Requirements
- Strong software engineering depth and the ability to work independently across ambiguous, customer-driven problems. - Excellent communication skills, including the ability to explain technical systems clearly to non-technical customers and adapt when an explanation is not landing. - Comfort operating in a forward-deployed or implementation-oriented environment, balancing customer outcomes with reusable product architecture. - Ability to move between technical discovery, integration work, architecture decisions, and hands-on delivery. - Willingness to work directly with utilities, energy-hardware manufacturers, and unfamiliar data sources.
Benefits and work setup
- Customer-facing work from initial discovery through production, with a mix of delivery, engineering, and technical strategy. - Medical, dental, and vision coverage, a 401(k), and flexible paid time off. - A structured interview process that includes technical conversations and a live simulated customer engagement; no take-home assignment is required.
