Software Engineer - PlanetScale Postgres

Role overview

Help build a fully managed, multi-cloud PostgreSQL service for demanding production workloads. You will develop the systems that provision, scale, replicate, and recover database clusters while maintaining high availability and minimizing customer-visible disruption. The role combines database engineering, distributed systems, infrastructure automation, performance tuning, and direct customer collaboration.

Responsibilities

- Design and build control-plane services that provision, scale, and heal PostgreSQL clusters. - Develop high-availability, disaster-recovery, backup, restore, migration, and data-protection workflows. - Tune PostgreSQL for large and demanding workloads, with close attention to reliability and performance. - Build and operate distributed, fault-tolerant services in a production environment. - Work with customers to understand their database workloads and convert those needs into platform improvements. - Participate in an on-call rotation and contribute to safe, dependable operations.

Requirements

- At least 5 years of experience designing, building, and supporting large-scale production systems. - Strong experience building, operating, or maintaining PostgreSQL deployments at scale. - Strong proficiency in Go, plus experience with languages such as Ruby, Python, Zig, or Rust. - Understanding of operating-system fundamentals, including multithreading, memory management, networking, storage, and performance. - Experience with distributed and fault-tolerant services, Kubernetes, and containerized applications. - Ability to reason about technical trade-offs, work independently, communicate clearly, and mentor other engineers.
