Senior Database Reliability Engineer I - Germany/Austria/UK
Job details
About this role
Role overview
Own the reliability, performance, and cost efficiency of a PostgreSQL platform running primarily on a managed cloud database service. This is a reliability engineering role focused on query performance, safe upgrades and migrations, operational guardrails, and automation. You’ll share responsibility for infrastructure work and on-call support while helping backend teams make safe database changes.
Responsibilities
- Tune queries, indexes, execution plans, and database configuration; plan capacity for high-volume, multi-tenant workloads. - Lead major-version upgrades and large schema migrations with minimal downtime, addressing performance regressions and migration risks. - Manage operational concerns such as vacuuming, bloat, long-running transactions, connection pooling, lock contention, and logical replication. - Review schema changes and build tooling and guardrails that help application teams make safe, performant changes. - Own restore and disaster-recovery planning, including rehearsals and appropriate access, encryption, and audit controls. - Build infrastructure and automation with Terraform and AWS tooling; maintain monitoring and alerts, contribute to CI/CD, and participate in on-call.
Requirements
- Strong hands-on experience with PostgreSQL and managed cloud database services. - A record of delivering zero-downtime upgrades and complex migrations on large, active tables. - Experience with replication, partitioning, read scaling, and backup and disaster-recovery design. - Practical Terraform and AWS experience, strong Linux skills, and scripting ability in Bash, Python, Ruby, or Go. - Familiarity with observability, security practices, production incident management, Git, and CI/CD workflows for database changes. - Clear written and verbal communication, ability to explain database trade-offs, and willingness to join an on-call rotation. - Relevant degree or equivalent practical experience.
Nice to have
- Familiarity with backend frameworks, caching systems, analytics pipelines, container platforms, NoSQL or vector databases, or cloud certifications.
Benefits and work setup
- Fully remote, with flexible schedules or a funded coworking option. Includes a monthly home-working stipend, equipment, 25 days of annual leave plus local holidays, sick and parental leave, a development fund, and regular team gatherings.
