Staff Engineer - Pricing
Job details
About this role
Role overview
Build and lead the evolution of a backend pricing service used to quote electricity contracts for business customers and energy generators. The work is data-heavy and numerical, with correctness, speed and clear explanations for unpriceable cases central to customer trust. As a senior engineer in the pricing group, you will establish service boundaries, improve reliability and guide technical practices across teams.
Responsibilities
- Design and iterate on a high-performance Pricing API, including preparing it for access by external users. - Lead the separation of pricing logic from surrounding systems into a service with clear ownership and boundaries. - Create monitoring and safeguards that identify pricing errors or slow responses before inaccurate quotes reach customers. - Ensure the system can explain why it cannot produce a price, and improve the speed of customer quotes. - Guide engineering quality through design reviews, standards, pairing and AI-assisted multi-agent workflows. - Respond to live pricing incidents and translate findings into durable engineering improvements.
Requirements
- Extensive production experience with backend Python, including designing and owning APIs at scale and handling escalations when they fail. - Led a substantial decoupling or migration of a live system while maintaining the needs of dependent services. - Strong FastAPI and SQL skills, with experience in data-intensive systems where numerical correctness has financial consequences. - Ability to set direction across teams without direct authority and negotiate service boundaries with neighboring groups. - Practical use of AI tools and experience designing multi-agent workflows that improve a team's throughput. - Product engineering judgment to balance response speed, accuracy and explainability for the people relying on prices.
Nice to have
- Experience in energy pricing, fintech or modern utility services; experience building APIs for third-party consumers. - Familiarity with AWS serverless and event-driven patterns, Lambda or PostgreSQL on RDS; experience with Polars or optimizing numerical code.
Benefits and work setup
- Remote-first, flexible working with core hours and no internal meetings on Friday afternoons. - Stock options, 25 days of annual leave plus public holidays, the option to swap public holidays, and a day off for your birthday. - Annual remote-work setup allowance of up to GBP 1,200 or EUR 1,400, plus monthly wellbeing support of up to GBP 150 or EUR 170.
