Role overview
A senior infrastructure engineering role serving as the first dedicated infrastructure hire on a Core Platform team at a US-based expense-splitting platform used by tens of millions of people globally. The platform currently runs on Ruby on Rails monoliths and the role focuses on architecting and launching pragmatic, developer-friendly, cost-effective systems. It is a hands-on position with significant authority over architecture, priorities, and roadmap, and includes mentoring other engineers.
Responsibilities
- Make architectural decisions that balance rapid feature development with cost proportional to growth - Define and own SLOs and SLIs for core services - Plan capacity using data-driven recommendations on when to scale or re-architect - Build and maintain infrastructure as code with Terraform across an AWS footprint and supporting services such as Cloudflare - Develop in-house tooling in Rust to improve the developer experience - Own CI/CD and deployment workflows - Collaborate with engineers to improve dependency and vulnerability management - Help engineers adopt healthy observability patterns - Evaluate and select vendors and services for infrastructure needs
Requirements
- 6-10 years of experience as an infrastructure engineer, platform engineer, or SRE in cloud-native AWS environments - Hands-on experience writing code that lets developers manage AWS resources - Strong Terraform skills - Proficiency in Ruby, Python, or a comparable language - Experience operating relational databases at scale - Sound judgment on security and reliability tradeoffs - A 4-year Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related field, or equivalent professional experience
