Role overview
A platform engineering role focused on the backend services that power a text-to-speech reading product used by tens of millions of people across mobile, web, desktop, and browser extension clients. The position sits within a fully distributed engineering organization and involves designing and maintaining APIs, ensuring reliability at scale, and supporting both consumer and B2B enterprise workflows.
Responsibilities
- Build and maintain backend APIs including the public text-to-speech API and internal services handling payments, subscriptions, authentication, and consumption tracking - Optimize and evolve the broader API landscape with a focus on performance, reliability, and maintainability - Collaborate with the B2B team to address customization and integration requirements for enterprise customers - Work closely with product, frontend, and AI teams to ensure backend architecture serves overall product and user-experience goals - Manage priorities dynamically, shipping quickly while preserving engineering quality
Requirements
- Proven backend engineering experience using TypeScript and Node.js in production - Hands-on experience with Google Cloud Platform and working knowledge of AWS, Azure, or comparable providers - Demonstrated efficiency at moving from concept to implementation without sacrificing reliability - Comfort operating with high autonomy in a flat, fast-paced organization - Clear written and verbal communication for effective remote and asynchronous collaboration
Nice to have
- Experience with Docker and container-based deployment workflows - Proficiency running highly available services on Kubernetes
