Role overview
A backend-focused engineering role on the platform team that builds and operates the services powering a widely used text-to-speech reading product serving tens of millions of users across mobile, desktop, browser, and web clients. The position is part of a fully distributed engineering organization and centers on designing APIs, optimizing service reliability, and partnering across product and client-facing teams to support both consumer and B2B use cases.
Responsibilities
- Design, build, and maintain backend APIs, including a public text-to-speech API and internal services for payments, subscriptions, authentication, and consumption tracking - Oversee the broader API surface area, continuously improving performance, scalability, and long-term maintainability - Collaborate on B2B integrations, tailoring platform capabilities to the customization needs of enterprise customers - Partner with product, frontend, and AI counterparts to ensure backend architecture aligns with product strategy and end-user experience - Evaluate trade-offs and prioritize engineering work based on urgency, impact, and business outcomes
Requirements
- Hands-on experience building production backend systems with TypeScript and Node.js - Working knowledge of Google Cloud Platform, with familiarity in at least one other major cloud such as AWS or Azure - Ability to move quickly from ideation through implementation while maintaining quality and reliability standards - Comfort working in a flat, fast-paced organization where ownership and initiative are expected - Strong written and verbal communication skills for async collaboration in a distributed team

- Experience with Docker and containerized deployment workflows - Proficiency operating highly available applications on Kubernetes
