Role overview
A backend software engineering role on the platform team responsible for the core services supporting a consumer-scale text-to-speech reading product deployed across mobile, desktop, web, and browser extensions. The position is part of a globally distributed engineering organization and centers on building reliable APIs, supporting enterprise integrations, and partnering across disciplines to deliver high-quality product experiences.
Responsibilities
- Design, build, and operate backend APIs, including a public text-to-speech API and internal services for payments, subscription management, authentication, and consumption tracking - Continuously improve the wider API landscape with attention to scalability, latency, and long-term maintainability - Partner with the B2B side of the business to deliver enterprise-grade customization and integration capabilities - Collaborate with product, AI, and frontend teams so that backend systems support overall product strategy - Prioritize and deliver work rapidly in a flat, outcomes-oriented environment
Requirements
- Solid production experience with TypeScript and Node.js on the backend - Direct working knowledge of Google Cloud Platform, plus familiarity with at least one additional cloud such as AWS or Azure - Ability to rapidly translate ideas into well-engineered, production-ready implementations - Comfort operating with autonomy in a fast-moving, flat organization - Strong communication skills suitable for remote, asynchronous collaboration
Nice to have
- Experience using Docker in production for containerized services - Familiarity with deploying and operating highly available workloads on Kubernetes
