About this role

Role overview

This senior engineering role focuses on building native Windows desktop applications that deliver text-to-speech reading tools to a large global user base. The position centers on architecting, leading, and shipping high-quality Windows client software with a strong emphasis on accessibility, performance, and inclusive user experience. The work combines hands-on coding with technical leadership, mentoring, and cross-functional collaboration with design, product, and QA partners.

Responsibilities

- Lead the design, architecture, and development of native Windows desktop applications using Windows App SDK, WinUI (or related UI frameworks), C#, XAML, and C++ where appropriate. - Establish and uphold engineering best practices across the Windows codebase, covering architecture, performance, memory usage, responsive UI, and cross-version compatibility on Windows 10 and 11. - Champion accessibility by integrating Windows accessibility APIs such as Microsoft UI Automation, ensuring screen-reader support, keyboard navigation, focus management, and inclusive control behavior. - Partner with product designers, UX researchers, and QA to shape feature planning, UI/UX architecture, and the long-term roadmap for the Windows platform. - Own features through their full lifecycle, from conception and design through implementation, testing, release, and ongoing maintenance. - Diagnose and resolve complex bugs, performance bottlenecks, memory leaks, rendering issues, and platform compatibility problems, proposing robust structural fixes.

Requirements

- 3+ years of Windows desktop application development using Windows App SDK, WinUI or similar UI frameworks, C#, and XAML, ideally paired with native Windows experience in C++, Win32, WinRT, or COM. - Strong grasp of Windows application architecture, including interop between managed .NET code and native components. - Demonstrated success designing, building, and shipping production-quality desktop applications that are reliable, performant, scalable, and maintainable. - Hands-on experience with Windows accessibility APIs and a clear commitment to inclusive, user-centered software. - Solid engineering fundamentals in object-oriented design, design patterns, data structures, algorithms, memory management, and asynchronous or multi-threaded programming. - Experience leading technical design, mentoring engineers, conducting code reviews, and making architecture-level decisions, paired with strong communication and cross-team collaboration skills.

Nice to have

- Background writing automated UI tests (unit, integration, UI automation) and familiarity with relevant desktop testing frameworks. - Experience optimizing desktop performance, including memory footprint, startup time, rendering performance, high-DPI support, and responsiveness under load. - Familiarity with localization, globalization, right-to-left UI support, and internationalization workflows. - Exposure to telemetry, analytics, crash reporting, logging, and error monitoring for desktop applications. - Experience shaping CI/CD workflows, release pipelines, and deployment strategies for desktop software. - Track record of owning feature areas long-term, including refactoring and managing technical debt.

Benefits and work setup

- High-impact position shaping the architecture and direction of a Windows product used by millions of people. - Collaborative, flat engineering culture where engineers contribute as builders and decision-makers rather than pure implementers. - Opportunities to mentor peers, steer technical direction, and grow toward broader technical leadership roles such as tech lead or architect. - Significant autonomy over how problems are solved, paired with end-to-end feature ownership and influence on long-term product vision. - Mission-driven environment centered on building reliable, accessible, user-focused software that makes reading more inclusive.
