The position centers on defining architecture, advancing accessibility, and delivering polished, reliable software to a global audience of tens of millions of users. The team operates in a fully distributed model with no central office, and the work supports a reading-assistance product used across multiple platforms.

Responsibilities

- Lead the design, architecture, and development of native Windows desktop applications using Windows App SDK, WinUI, C#, XAML, and C++ when needed - Define and enforce best practices for Windows desktop development including code architecture, performance, memory usage, responsive UI, cross-version compatibility, and maintainability - Drive accessibility efforts by integrating and validating support for accessibility APIs such as Microsoft UI Automation, ensuring UI controls, focus management, keyboard navigation, and screen reader support - Collaborate with product designers, UX researchers, QA, and other stakeholders to shape feature planning, UI/UX architecture, and the long-term Windows roadmap - Own the full feature lifecycle from conception through design, implementation, testing, release, and maintenance - Diagnose and resolve complex bugs, performance bottlenecks, memory leaks, rendering issues, and compatibility problems, and propose robust architectural solutions

Requirements

- 3+ years of experience in Windows desktop application development using Windows App SDK, WinUI or similar, C#, and XAML, with additional native Windows code experience (C++, Win32, WinRT, or COM) strongly preferred - Deep understanding of Windows application architecture, including interop between managed (.NET) and native code - Track record of designing, building, and shipping production-quality desktop applications with emphasis on reliability, performance, scalability, and maintainability - Strong experience with Windows accessibility APIs and a dedication to building inclusive software - Solid software engineering fundamentals including OOP, design patterns, data structures, algorithms, memory management, and multi-threading or asynchronous programming - Experience leading technical design, mentoring engineers, conducting code reviews, and making architecture-level decisions - Strong communication skills with the ability to articulate tradeoffs, collaborate cross-functionally, and drive consensus - User-centric mindset focused on polished, intuitive, and accessible experiences

Nice to have

- Experience with automated UI testing including unit, integration, and UI automation tests - Performance optimization for desktop apps including memory usage, startup time, rendering, and high-DPI support - Localization and globalization experience including right-to-left UI and internationalization - Familiarity with telemetry, analytics, crash reporting, logging, and error monitoring - Experience shaping CI/CD workflows, release pipelines, and deployment strategies for desktop applications - Demonstrated ownership of feature areas including long-term maintenance, refactoring, and technical debt management

Benefits and work setup

- High-impact role defining architecture and shaping the future of a Windows product used by millions of people - Collaborative, flat engineering culture where engineers are builders and decision-makers - Opportunities to lead, mentor others, and grow into broader technical leadership such as Tech Lead or Architect - Flexibility, autonomy, and responsibility with end-to-end feature ownership - Fully distributed work arrangement with no office requirement - Purpose-driven mission centered on building reliable, accessible, user-centered software
