About this role

Role overview

A senior engineering role focused on building native Windows desktop applications for a text-to-speech reading platform used by tens of millions of people across web, mobile, and desktop. The position centers on leading architecture and design decisions for the Windows client, with a strong commitment to accessibility and inclusive user experience. Work takes place in a fully distributed engineering organization.

Responsibilities

- Lead the design, architecture, and development of native Windows desktop applications using Windows App SDK, WinUI, C#, XAML, and C++ when appropriate - Establish and enforce engineering best practices covering performance, memory usage, responsive UI, cross-version compatibility (Windows 10/11+), and maintainability - Drive accessibility efforts through integration of Windows accessibility APIs, including focus management, keyboard navigation, screen-reader support, and usable controls for users with disabilities - Partner with product designers, UX researchers, QA, and other stakeholders to shape feature planning, UI/UX architecture, and the long-term Windows roadmap - Take ownership of features across their full lifecycle, from conception through design, implementation, testing, release, and ongoing maintenance - Diagnose and resolve complex bugs, performance bottlenecks, memory leaks, rendering issues, and compatibility problems, proposing durable architectural fixes

Requirements

- Three or more years of Windows desktop application development with Windows App SDK, WinUI or similar frameworks, C#, and XAML, plus exposure to native Windows code such as C++, Win32, WinRT, or COM - Deep understanding of Windows application architecture, including interop between managed (.NET) and native code - Demonstrated history of designing, building, and shipping production-quality desktop applications with attention to reliability, performance, scalability, and maintainability - Hands-on experience with Windows accessibility APIs such as Microsoft UI Automation and a commitment to inclusive software design - Strong computer science fundamentals, including object-oriented programming, design patterns, data structures, algorithms, memory management, and asynchronous or multi-threaded programming - Experience leading technical design, mentoring engineers, conducting code reviews, and making architecture-level decisions, paired with clear cross-functional communication skills

Nice to have

- Experience writing automated UI tests, including unit, integration, and UI automation suites - Background in performance optimization for desktop apps, covering memory usage, startup time, rendering performance, high-DPI support, and responsiveness under load - Familiarity with localization, globalization, right-to-left UI support, and internationalization practices - Experience with telemetry, analytics, crash reporting, logging, and error monitoring in desktop environments - Exposure to CI/CD workflows, release pipelines, and deployment strategies for desktop applications - Track record of long-term ownership of feature areas, including refactoring and technical debt management

Benefits and work setup

- High-impact role shaping the architecture and future direction of a widely used Windows product - Collaborative, flat engineering culture that emphasizes autonomy, ownership, and shared decision-making - Opportunities to mentor others and grow into broader technical leadership positions such as Tech Lead or Architect - Fully remote, distributed work environment with flexibility in how problems are solved - Purpose-driven mission centered on building reliable, accessible, and user-centered software - United States-based salary range of $140,000-$200,000 USD per year, plus bonus and equity, depending on experience
