About this role
Role overview Help build a leading text-to-speech reading platform used by tens of millions of people to consume written content as audio. This senior engineering role owns native Windows desktop development, defining architecture, accessibility standards, and the long-term technical direction for a high-traffic product. The position combines hands-on coding with technical leadership in a distributed engineering organization.
Responsibilities - Lead the design, architecture, and implementation of native Windows desktop applications using Windows App SDK, WinUI, C#, XAML, and C++ where appropriate. - Establish and enforce best practices across the Windows codebase covering code architecture, performance, memory usage, responsive UI, cross-version compatibility, and maintainability. - Champion accessibility by integrating Windows accessibility APIs, validating focus management, keyboard navigation, screen-reader support, and inclusive UI patterns. - Collaborate with product designers, UX researchers, QA, and other stakeholders to shape feature planning, UI/UX architecture, and the platform roadmap. - Own the full feature lifecycle from conception and design through implementation, testing, release, and ongoing maintenance. - Diagnose and resolve complex bugs, performance bottlenecks, memory leaks, rendering issues, and compatibility problems, proposing robust architectural solutions.
Requirements - 3+ years of experience building Windows desktop applications with Windows App SDK, WinUI or comparable frameworks, C#, XAML, plus exposure to native Windows code (C++, Win32, WinRT, COM). - Deep understanding of Windows application architecture, including interop between managed .NET code and native components. - Demonstrated track record of shipping production-quality desktop software with a focus on reliability, performance, scalability, and maintainability. - Hands-on experience with Windows accessibility APIs such as Microsoft UI Automation and a strong commitment to inclusive software design. - Solid computer science fundamentals including OOP, design patterns, data structures, algorithms, memory management, and asynchronous programming. - Experience leading technical design, mentoring engineers, conducting code reviews, and making architecture-level decisions, plus strong cross-functional communication skills.
Nice to have - Background in automated UI testing, including unit, integration, and UI automation frameworks. - Experience optimizing desktop performance across memory, startup time, rendering, high-DPI scenarios, and responsiveness under load. - Familiarity with localization, globalization, right-to-left UI, and multi-region accessibility considerations. - Exposure to telemetry, analytics, crash reporting, logging, and error monitoring tooling. - Experience shaping CI/CD pipelines and release workflows for desktop applications. - A history of owning feature areas long-term, including maintenance, refactoring, and managing technical debt.
Benefits and work setup - High-impact role defining the architecture and user experience of a product used by millions. - Collaborative, flat engineering culture emphasizing ownership, autonomy, and end-to-end responsibility. - Clear opportunities to mentor others and grow toward Tech Lead or Architect-level leadership. - 100% remote, distributed working environment with flexible scheduling. - Mission-driven focus on building reliable, accessible software that removes barriers to reading. - United States-based compensation in the range of 140,000–200,000 USD per year, plus bonus and equity, depending on experience.
