About this role

Role overview

A senior engineering role focused on leading native Windows desktop application development for a widely used reading and text-to-speech product suite. The position combines hands-on architecture and coding with technical leadership, shaping the long-term direction of the Windows platform and championing accessibility across millions of users. The work spans the full lifecycle of feature delivery, from design through maintenance, in a fully distributed, mission-driven engineering environment.

Responsibilities

- Lead the design, architecture, and implementation of Windows desktop applications using Windows App SDK, WinUI, C#, XAML, and C++ where appropriate. - Establish and uphold engineering best practices for performance, memory usage, responsive UI, cross-version compatibility, and maintainability. - Drive accessibility initiatives, integrating Windows accessibility APIs and ensuring strong support for screen readers, keyboard navigation, focus management, and inclusive UI patterns. - Partner with product designers, UX researchers, and QA to shape feature planning, UI/UX architecture, and platform roadmap decisions. - Own the full feature lifecycle from conception and design through testing, release, and ongoing maintenance. - Diagnose and resolve complex bugs, memory leaks, rendering issues, and performance bottlenecks, proposing durable architectural improvements.

Requirements

- Several years of professional experience building production Windows desktop applications with Windows App SDK, WinUI (or comparable frameworks), C#, and XAML, plus comfort with native code such as C++, Win32, WinRT, or COM. - Deep understanding of Windows application architecture, including managed-to-native interop. - Demonstrated success shipping reliable, performant desktop software with strong attention to scalability and maintainability. - Hands-on experience with Windows accessibility APIs and a commitment to inclusive product design. - Solid engineering fundamentals across object-oriented design, data structures, algorithms, memory management, and asynchronous or multi-threaded programming. - Proven ability to lead technical design, mentor engineers, conduct code reviews, and drive cross-functional alignment.

Nice to have

- Experience writing automated UI tests, including unit, integration, and UI automation suites. - Background in desktop performance optimization such as startup time, high-DPI rendering, and responsiveness under load. - Familiarity with localization, globalization, right-to-left UI support, and multi-region accessibility. - Experience with telemetry, crash reporting, logging, and CI/CD pipelines for desktop releases. - Track record of owning modules long-term, including refactoring and managing technical debt.

Benefits and work setup

- High-impact role with direct influence over architecture and user experience for a multi-million-user product. - Distributed, flat-team culture emphasizing autonomy, ownership, and decision-making authority. - Clear growth path toward technical leadership positions such as Tech Lead or Architect. - U.S.-based compensation of approximately $140,000–$200,000 per year plus bonus and equity, depending on experience.
