About this role

Role overview A senior engineering role focused on building and evolving native Windows desktop applications for a text-to-speech reading platform used by tens of millions of people. The position centers on shaping the architecture and long-term direction of the Windows product within a fully distributed engineering organization. Work spans WinUI-based desktop clients, accessibility engineering, and cross-functional collaboration to ship reliable, inclusive experiences.

Responsibilities - Lead the design, architecture, and implementation of native Windows desktop applications built on Windows App SDK, WinUI, C#, XAML, and C++ where needed. - Define and enforce best practices for Windows desktop development, covering code architecture, performance, memory usage, responsive UI, and cross-version compatibility across Windows 10/11. - Drive accessibility initiatives, integrating Windows accessibility APIs, validating UI controls, focus management, keyboard navigation, and screen-reader behavior. - Partner with product designers, UX researchers, QA, and other stakeholders to plan features and shape the platform roadmap. - Take end-to-end ownership of features from conception through release and ongoing maintenance, ensuring quality and consistency. - Diagnose and resolve complex bugs, performance bottlenecks, memory leaks, rendering issues, and compatibility problems while proposing durable architectural solutions.

Requirements - Three or more years of professional Windows desktop application development using Windows App SDK, WinUI or similar frameworks, C#, and XAML, plus comfort with native Windows code such as C++, Win32, WinRT, or COM. - Deep understanding of Windows application architecture, including interop between managed .NET code and native components. - Demonstrated track record of shipping production-quality desktop applications with attention to reliability, performance, scalability, and maintainability. - Hands-on experience with Windows accessibility APIs and a commitment to inclusive software design. - Strong computer science fundamentals including object-oriented design, design patterns, data structures, algorithms, memory management, and asynchronous or multi-threaded programming. - Experience leading technical design, mentoring engineers, conducting code reviews, and making architecture-level decisions, paired with strong communication and cross-functional collaboration skills.

Nice to have - Experience writing automated UI tests including unit, integration, and UI automation tests. - Background in performance optimization for desktop apps covering startup time, rendering, high-DPI support, and responsiveness under load. - Familiarity with localization, globalization, right-to-left UI support, and international accessibility considerations. - Experience with telemetry, analytics, crash reporting, logging, and error monitoring in desktop products. - Prior work shaping CI/CD pipelines, release workflows, and deployment strategies for desktop applications. - Track record of owning feature areas long-term, including maintenance, refactoring, and managing technical debt.

Benefits and work setup - Fully distributed engineering environment with no physical office, offering flexibility and autonomy. - High-impact role defining the architecture of the Windows product used by millions. - Collaborative, flat engineering culture with meaningful ownership and decision-making authority. - Opportunities to mentor others, steer technical direction, and grow toward technical leadership roles. - United States-based compensation range of $140,000–$200,000 per year plus bonus and equity, depending on experience.
