Role overview
A senior engineering role focused on building native Windows desktop applications for a text-to-speech reading platform used by more than 50 million people worldwide. The position owns architecture decisions, shapes the long-term Windows roadmap, and ensures accessibility is treated as a first-class concern throughout the product. It is a fully remote, distributed role embedded in a cross-functional team shipping consumer-facing productivity software.
Responsibilities
- Lead the design, architecture, and development of native Windows desktop applications using the Windows App SDK, WinUI (or comparable UI frameworks), C#, XAML, and C++ when needed - Define and enforce best practices across the Windows codebase, covering architecture, performance, memory usage, responsive UI, and cross-version compatibility - Drive accessibility work by integrating Windows accessibility APIs, validating focus management, keyboard navigation, and screen-reader behavior - Collaborate with product designers, UX researchers, and QA to plan features, refine UI/UX architecture, and shape the platform roadmap - Own the full feature lifecycle from conception through design, implementation, testing, release, and ongoing maintenance - Diagnose and resolve complex bugs, performance bottlenecks, memory leaks, rendering issues, and compatibility problems, proposing durable architectural fixes
Requirements
- 3+ years building Windows desktop applications with Windows App SDK, WinUI or similar frameworks, C#, and XAML, plus exposure to native Windows code (C++, Win32/WinRT/COM) - Deep understanding of Windows application architecture, including interop between .NET and native code - Proven track record shipping production-quality desktop software with attention to reliability, performance, and maintainability - Hands-on experience with Windows accessibility APIs (such as Microsoft UI Automation) and a commitment to inclusive design - Strong engineering fundamentals in object-oriented design, data structures, algorithms, memory management, and asynchronous programming - Experience mentoring engineers, leading technical design, running code reviews, and driving cross-team consensus
Nice to have
- Automated UI testing experience, including unit, integration, and UI automation tests - Performance optimization work on startup time, rendering, high-DPI support, and responsiveness under load - Localization, globalization, and right-to-left UI support - Familiarity with telemetry, analytics, crash reporting, logging, and error monitoring in desktop applications - Experience shaping CI/CD pipelines and release strategies for desktop products - Track record of owning feature areas long-term, including refactoring and managing technical debt
