About this role
Role overview A distributed engineering team is hiring a senior engineer to lead the development of a native Windows desktop application that converts text from PDFs, books, documents, articles, and websites into spoken audio. The role blends hands-on coding with architectural ownership, accessibility advocacy, and cross-functional collaboration across a fully remote organization based in the United Kingdom. You will define long-term technical direction for the Windows platform and ship features used by a very large consumer audience.
Responsibilities - Lead design, architecture, and implementation of native Windows desktop applications using Windows App SDK, WinUI, C#, XAML, and C++ where required. - Establish and enforce engineering standards covering code architecture, performance, memory usage, responsive UI, and compatibility across Windows 10 and 11. - Champion accessibility by integrating Microsoft UI Automation or equivalent frameworks, validating screen reader behavior, focus management, and keyboard navigation. - Partner with product designers, UX researchers, and QA to plan features, shape UI architecture, and contribute to the Windows platform roadmap. - Own features end to end, from conception and design through implementation, testing, release, and ongoing maintenance. - Diagnose complex bugs, performance bottlenecks, memory leaks, and rendering issues, and propose durable architectural solutions.
Requirements - 3+ years building Windows desktop applications with Windows App SDK, WinUI or similar frameworks, C#, and XAML, plus comfort with C++ and Win32/WinRT/COM. - Deep understanding of Windows application architecture, including interop between managed .NET code and native code. - Demonstrated success shipping production-quality desktop software with strong reliability, performance, and scalability characteristics. - Hands-on experience with Windows accessibility APIs and a commitment to inclusive design. - Solid software engineering fundamentals: OOP, design patterns, data structures, algorithms, memory management, and asynchronous programming. - Track record leading technical design, mentoring engineers, running code reviews, and making architectural decisions.
Nice to have - Automated UI testing experience across unit, integration, and UI automation suites. - Performance tuning for memory usage, startup time, rendering, and high-DPI scenarios. - Localization, globalization, and right-to-left UI experience. - Familiarity with telemetry, crash reporting, and error monitoring. - CI/CD pipeline and release engineering experience for desktop apps.
