Role overview A senior engineering role responsible for leading the architecture, development, and quality of a native Windows desktop application that supports a text-to-speech reading platform serving millions. The position combines technical leadership, deep Windows expertise, and a strong accessibility focus within a fully remote, distributed team. It suits an engineer who wants to drive long-term technical direction on a high-traffic Windows product.
Responsibilities - Lead the design, architecture, and implementation of native Windows desktop applications using Windows App SDK, WinUI, C#, XAML, and C++ as needed - Define and maintain engineering best practices covering code architecture, performance, memory usage, responsive UI, and cross-version Windows 10/11+ compatibility - Drive accessibility initiatives by integrating Microsoft UI Automation and related frameworks, validating keyboard navigation, focus management, and screen reader behavior - Work closely with product designers, UX researchers, and QA to inform feature planning, UI/UX architecture, and the long-term Windows roadmap - Take end-to-end ownership of features through conception, design, implementation, testing, release, and maintenance - Triage and resolve complex bugs, performance bottlenecks, memory leaks, rendering issues, and compatibility problems with sound architectural solutions
Requirements - 3+ years building Windows desktop apps with Windows App SDK, WinUI (or similar), C#, and XAML; experience with native code (C++, Win32, WinRT, COM) is a strong plus - Deep knowledge of Windows application architecture, including interop between managed .NET code and native components - History of shipping production-quality desktop applications emphasizing reliability, performance, and maintainability - Hands-on experience with Windows accessibility APIs and a personal commitment to inclusive software - Strong CS fundamentals: OOP, design patterns, data structures, algorithms, memory management, and multi-threaded or async programming - Experience leading technical design, mentoring engineers, reviewing code, and making architectural decisions - Excellent communication skills with the ability to align cross-functional teams around tradeoffs
Nice to have - Building automated UI tests across unit, integration, and UI automation layers - Performance tuning for desktop apps (startup time, memory footprint, rendering, high-DPI support) - Localization, globalization, and RTL UI work, including accessibility across regions - Familiarity with telemetry, analytics, crash reporting, logging, and error monitoring - Shaping CI/CD pipelines, release processes, and deployment strategies for desktop apps - Sustained ownership of feature areas including refactoring and technical debt management
