About this role

Role overview

Join a globally distributed engineering team building consumer-facing reading and accessibility software used by tens of millions of people. As a Senior Software Engineer focused on Windows desktop applications, you will own the technical direction of the native Windows product in Fukuoka, shaping architecture, mentoring peers, and shipping polished, accessible experiences. The role blends hands-on coding with technical leadership and cross-functional collaboration in a fully remote, flat-structured environment.

Responsibilities

- Lead the design, architecture, and implementation of native Windows desktop applications built on Windows App SDK, WinUI (or comparable UI frameworks), C#, XAML, and C++ where appropriate. - Establish and enforce best practices across the codebase, covering architecture, performance, memory usage, responsive UI, cross-version compatibility on Windows 10/11+, and long-term maintainability. - Champion accessibility by integrating Microsoft UI Automation and related frameworks, validating screen-reader support, focus management, keyboard navigation, and inclusive UI controls. - Partner with product designers, UX researchers, and QA to plan features, shape UI/UX architecture, and contribute to the long-term Windows platform roadmap. - Own the full feature lifecycle from conception and design through implementation, testing, release, and ongoing maintenance, ensuring quality and consistency. - Diagnose and resolve complex bugs, performance bottlenecks, memory leaks, rendering issues, and compatibility problems, proposing durable architectural fixes.

Requirements

- Three or more years of professional Windows desktop development experience with Windows App SDK, WinUI or similar frameworks, C#, and XAML, plus working knowledge of native Windows code (C++, Win32, WinRT, COM). - Deep understanding of Windows application architecture, including interop between managed .NET code and native components. - Demonstrated success shipping production-quality desktop applications with attention to reliability, performance, scalability, and maintainability. - Hands-on experience with Windows accessibility APIs (such as Microsoft UI Automation) and a strong commitment to inclusive software design. - Solid computer science fundamentals: object-oriented design, design patterns, data structures, algorithms, memory management, and asynchronous or multi-threaded programming. - Experience leading technical design, mentoring engineers, conducting code reviews, and making architecture-level decisions, paired with clear cross-functional communication.

Nice to have

- Background in automated UI testing, including unit, integration, and UI automation frameworks. - Performance tuning for desktop apps, covering startup time, memory footprint, rendering, high-DPI support, and responsiveness under load. - Familiarity with localization, globalization, right-to-left UI, and regional accessibility considerations. - Experience with telemetry, analytics, crash reporting, logging, and error monitoring for desktop clients. - Prior work shaping CI/CD pipelines, release processes, and deployment strategies for desktop software. - Track record of owning feature areas long-term, including refactoring and managing technical debt.

Benefits and work setup

- High-impact role defining the architecture and direction of a Windows product used by millions. - Collaborative, flat engineering culture with meaningful autonomy over problem-solving and feature ownership. - Clear growth path toward technical leadership roles such as Tech Lead or Architect, including formal mentoring responsibilities. - Fully remote, distributed working model with flexible hours and trust-based ownership of end-to-end delivery. - Mission-driven environment focused on building reliable, accessible, user-centered software that removes barriers to reading and learning.
