About this role

Role overview A senior engineering position focused on leading the design and development of native Windows desktop applications for a text-to-speech reading platform used by tens of millions of people. The role combines hands-on coding with technical leadership, shaping the long-term direction of the Windows product in a fully distributed engineering organization that ships consumer software across mobile, desktop, browser, and web.

Responsibilities - Lead the architecture, design, and implementation of native Windows desktop applications using Windows App SDK, WinUI, C#, XAML, and C++ where appropriate. - Define and enforce engineering best practices across the Windows codebase, covering code architecture, performance, memory usage, responsive UI, and cross-version compatibility on Windows 10 and 11. - Drive accessibility work by integrating Windows accessibility APIs, validating screen-reader behavior, focus management, and keyboard navigation so the product works for users with disabilities. - Partner with product designers, UX researchers, and QA to shape feature planning, UI architecture, and the long-term Windows roadmap. - Own features end-to-end from conception through release and ongoing maintenance, ensuring quality and consistency across releases. - Diagnose and resolve complex bugs, performance bottlenecks, memory leaks, rendering issues, and compatibility problems, proposing durable architectural fixes.

Requirements - 3+ years building production Windows desktop applications with Windows App SDK, WinUI or comparable UI frameworks, C#, and XAML, plus exposure to native Windows code such as C++, Win32, WinRT, or COM. - Deep understanding of Windows application architecture and interop between managed (.NET) and native code. - Track record of shipping reliable, performant desktop software with attention to scalability and maintainability. - Hands-on experience with Windows accessibility frameworks such as Microsoft UI Automation and a commitment to inclusive design. - Strong computer science fundamentals including OOP, design patterns, data structures, algorithms, memory management, and asynchronous or multi-threaded programming. - Experience leading technical design, mentoring engineers, running code reviews, and making architecture-level decisions, plus strong communication and collaboration skills.

Nice to have - Automated UI testing experience with unit, integration, or UI automation frameworks. - Performance optimization for desktop apps including startup time, memory footprint, rendering, and high-DPI support. - Localization, globalization, right-to-left UI, and internationalization experience. - Familiarity with telemetry, analytics, crash reporting, logging, and error monitoring. - Shaping CI/CD pipelines and release processes for desktop applications. - Long-term ownership of feature areas including maintenance, refactoring, and managing technical debt.

Benefits and work setup - High-impact role shaping the architecture and user experience of a product used by millions. - Collaborative, flat engineering culture with meaningful autonomy over problem-solving. - Clear path toward broader technical leadership such as tech lead or architect roles. - Fully remote, distributed team with flexible work arrangements. - Compensation for United States-based candidates is $140,000–$200,000 USD per year plus bonus and equity, depending on experience.
