About this role

Role overview

A senior engineering role focused on building and advancing native Windows desktop applications for a widely used text-to-speech product serving tens of millions of readers. The position sits inside a fully distributed engineering organization with no central office and centers on shaping the architecture, accessibility, and long-term quality of the Windows experience. The broader product family spans iOS, Android, Mac, a Chrome extension, and web apps; this role owns the Windows platform end to end.

Responsibilities

- Lead the design, architecture, and development of native Windows desktop applications using Windows App SDK, WinUI, C#, XAML, and C++ where appropriate - Establish and enforce engineering best practices across code architecture, performance, memory usage, responsive UI, and cross-version compatibility across Windows 10 and 11+ - Drive accessibility work, integrating frameworks such as Microsoft UI Automation to ensure screen-reader support, focus management, keyboard navigation, and inclusive UX - Partner closely with product designers, UX researchers, QA, and other stakeholders to shape feature planning, UI/UX architecture, and the long-term Windows roadmap - Take ownership of the full feature lifecycle from conception through design, implementation, testing, release, and ongoing maintenance - Investigate and resolve complex bugs, performance bottlenecks, memory leaks, rendering issues, and compatibility problems, proposing robust architectural fixes

Requirements

- 3+ years of Windows desktop application development using Windows App SDK, WinUI or similar, C#, and XAML, ideally with additional native experience in C++, Win32, WinRT, or COM - Deep understanding of Windows application architecture, including interop between managed (.NET) and native code - Track record of shipping production-quality desktop applications with a strong emphasis on reliability, performance, scalability, and maintainability - Hands-on experience with Windows accessibility APIs and a clear commitment to inclusive software design - Strong computer science fundamentals including object-oriented design, design patterns, data structures, algorithms, memory management, and asynchronous or multi-threaded programming - Demonstrated ability to lead technical design, mentor other engineers, run code reviews, and drive architecture-level decisions with cross-functional stakeholders

Nice to have

- Experience writing automated UI tests across unit, integration, and UI automation layers - Performance tuning for desktop apps covering memory usage, startup time, rendering performance, high-DPI support, and responsiveness under load - Localization, internationalization, and right-to-left UI support, including accessibility for multiple regions - Familiarity with telemetry, analytics, crash reporting, logging, and error monitoring in desktop applications - Experience shaping CI/CD workflows, release pipelines, and deployment strategies for desktop products - Track record of owning feature areas or modules long term, including refactoring and managing technical debt

Benefits and work setup

- High-impact role defining architecture and shaping a Windows product used by millions of people - Flat, collaborative engineering culture with substantial autonomy over how problems are solved - Growth pathways toward broader technical leadership such as Tech Lead or Architect - Fully remote, distributed team with no central office - Mission-driven environment focused on building reliable, accessible, user-centered software - United States-based salary range of $140,000 to $200,000 per year plus bonus and equity, depending on experience
